Based on the autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras published in 1984. A ferry in Saigon in the 1930s: a 15 year-old French girl meets a young, elegant Chinese man from a rich family. The Chinese offers the girl a ride home: they become lovers and spend a night together – away from all social conventions. Both their families are against this liaison: the Chinese is forced to marry a rich girl his parents have chosen for him, and the French girl goes with her mother to Paris. After many years, she receives a phone call "Hi, it's me. I just wanted to hear your voice again". She recognizes him at once and he says he will never forget her and always love her, as she's a part of him. This impressive performance about forbidden love and boundless passion is convincingly presented by Birute Mar, a talented young actress and director with a long awards record.
